The Peanuts Gang: Worth More Than Peanuts

You're a valuable man, Charlie Brown.
Newspaper publisher and TV station owner E.W. Scripps Co. is selling
the licensing rights for the "Peanuts" gang to Iconix Brand Group,
which owns Joe Boxer, Candies, and Danskin, for $175 million.
The news of the upcoming sale sparked a slew of searches on Chuck,
Snoopy, Lucy, and the gang. Web lookups on "snoopy comics," "peanuts
sale," and "peanuts gang" all posted triple-digit gains. Also getting
a big boost: queries on the late creator of Peanuts, Charles Schulz.
A buzzy article from the AP explains that the family of Mr. Schulz will
"receive 20 percent ownership and pay that percentage of the sale price."
CNN reports that "the Peanuts brand is currently licensed in over 40
countries and generates annual sales of over $2 billion."
So, among the Peanuts characters, who has the biggest online following?
Well, in Yahoo! Search, it's not even close: Snoopy is far and away the
most popular character. In second place: lovable loser Charlie Brown; and
in third: tomboy Peppermint Patty.
The sale also inspired some lookups on the always-impossible-to-understand
-adults. Specifically, searchers want to know how their "mwah-mwah-mwah"
voices are created. Nothing high-tech here, kids: It's just a good
ol'-fashioned trombone.
